What We Do
Hanseatic Scholarship Programme
The Hanseatic Scholarship for Britons was introduced in 1970 in the style of the British Cecil Rhodes Trust's scholarship for German students in Great Britain. The scholarship is dedicated to the goal of a deeper German-British understanding in a European context.
It is aimed at students of all nationalities from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge who wish to study or conduct research at a university in Germany. Up to three scholarships of € 1,250 per month are awarded annually. The duration of the sponsorship is up to two years. The target group consists of students whose studies and personal development can be sustainably enriched and promoted by a stay in Germany. As a rule, applicants who have already had the opportunity to study in Germany for a longer period of time are excluded. With regard to the aim of the scholarship, students should apply if they are working on a topic with a German-British connection in the spirit of European understanding.
The selection process for the academic year 2026/2027 has ended.
The application procedure takes place annually at the University of Oxford. An independent selection committee decides on the selection based on the applicants' written documents as well as after personal interviews.
