The Toepfer Foundation

We are anchored in Hamburg and at the same time focus on the whole of Europe. We promote art & culture, education & society, science and sustainable land use with a variety of resources, operational formats and methods: from individual scholarships and prizes to academies, think tanks and workshops. We are present in our home port, but we are also always curiously casting off our lines and setting new sails with courage.

Accompanying biographies

We support and accompany outstanding, intelligent, committed individuals in various phases of their lives and thus provide impetus for social change. Linked to this is the aspiration to discover talent at the right time and to encourage people to take new steps.

Daring change

We are convinced that the willingness to experiment and the courage to take risks are crucial for the future viability of society. In clearly defined thematic areas, we want to bring about changes with a model character.

Giving space

We are happy to be generous hosts and make the Foundation's various locations available as a forum for meeting, discussion or reflection, as a stage or salon. In addition to the office in the Georgshof and the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichtchen, the seminar center Gut Siggen is of particular importance for the Foundation's work.

Art and culture

Culture has a raison d'être beyond usability. And yet we dare to ask again and again: Who cares? Who should listen to this concert? Why should anyone see this exhibition? Why is this museum indispensable? Asking ourselves these questions is the focus of our cultural promotion.

Education and society

In the Education & Society program area, we are committed to democracy and social cohesion, participation in the information and education society, equal opportunities, and European exchange and understanding. Science

In the programme area Science, we would like to open up space for reflection and encourage change in the field of science. In doing so, we focus on science communication in all its facets and on European understanding in a scientific context.

Future-oriented land use

Against the backdrop of climate and biodiversity crises, structural change, digitalization and changing societal expectations, the pressure for change is increasing on various forms of land use, on agricultural and food systems as well as on forests and protected areas. Questions arise about more sustainable and climate-friendly land use that is in line with nature conservation goals.
