What We Do

School farm Wilsede

At the school farm in Wilsede, Hamburg school classes from the 3rd to 6th school year (up to a maximum of 28 pupils) are given the opportunity to experience the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park and the work on a farm for a week. The goal is to achieve a finished product or a positive work outcome. Currently, four full scholarships are awarded annually for group stays. The application deadline for the 2022/2023 school year was February 28, 2022, and applications are not currently being accepted.

The overall program in Wilsede is designed to strengthen social cohesion in the class through a mixture of small group work and joint activities and to awaken interest and fun in nature and especially in the cultural landscape of Lüneburg Heath. The most important element of the program is the work in guided small groups, in which 5 to 6 children at a time can gain practical experience in the areas of agriculture, landscape management and home economics. The work units are supervised by practitioners from the Lüneburg Heath Nature Conservation Park Foundation and complement the school lessons with the aspect of "manual work". In each of the work units, the students independently implement a practical work that has been completed in terms of content.

In the field, they help to cultivate, care for, and harvest crops that, if possible, go directly to their own tables. For example, grain is threshed by hand from sheaves of grain, which is then milled, baked and eaten immediately. The work groups offer the students the opportunity to get a taste of largely unknown, practical work processes and to use their own energy to produce products that are otherwise often bought as finished products in the supermarket. Dealing with animals, especially horses, can appeal to empathy and also "draw out" children who might otherwise struggle in unfamiliar surroundings.

Applications will be open again for 2022. Therefore, check this page again in early December 2021 and apply then for scholarships for the school year 2022/2023.
